Even if you have never actually been to Wrightsville Beach, chances are you have at least seen a photo of the iconic Johnny Mercers Fishing Pier. Since the 1930's, when it was built by Julian Morton, this pier has been a hotspot for fisherman. On any given day you will see dozens of folks out on the pier angling for the big catch of the day. The pier also holds a variety of fishing events throughout the year. But, fishing is not the only thing to do when visiting the pier.
One of my favorite things to do with my family is to take a walk to the pier in the evening. We grab an ice cream for the kids and my wife and I grab a tasty cold beverage and take a stroll out on the pier to observe the fisherman, the beach goers and occasionally the sea life at the bottom of the ocean on one of the crystal clear days. Sometimes you can also see turtle nests and sand sculptures just below the pier. If you are a local, like I am, then you may know that you can pay a membership fee for the year and skip paying the entry fee each time you visit.
The pier also features live music a few times a month and has a wonderful little grill with all the tasty beach treats you can imagine. From breakfast sandwiches to hamburgers the pier grill has you covered.
There is also no shortage of souvenirs at Johnny Mercers Fishing pier. From magnets to beach cover-ups and, of course, every fishing accessory you can think of (including bait) can be found at the pier store. There is also a variety of beach video games to keep the kids entertained.
I highly recommend you check out Johnny Mercers Fishing Pier on your next trip to Wrightsville Beach after all, it's a WB icon.
